Dr. Alice Villalobos is 2005-06
President of the American Association of Human Animal Bond Veterinarians
(AAHABV). She is a well known pioneer in the field of cancer care for
companion animals and a founding member of the Veterinary Cancer Society.
A 1972 graduate of UC Davis, she completed Dr. Gordon Theilen’s
first mock residency program in oncology and has served the profession
by consulting, writing and lecturing in the rapidly growing field of veterinary
oncology and end of life care . She was awarded the UC Davis Alumni Achievement
Award in 1994, and the Leo Bustad Companion Animal Veterinarian of the
Year Award in 1999. She is Editor-in-Chief of the AAHABV Newsletter, Secretary
of the Animal Health Foundation of the SCVMA and Founder of the Peter
Zippi Memorial Fund for Animals, with over 10,000 rescued and placed pets. |

Carreen Schuller, R.V.T.,
graduated from Harcum Jr. College in 1985, and completed her internship
at the University of Pennsylvania. She is also a member of the Veterinary
Technician Cancer Society (VTCS). Specializing in oncology with Dr. Alice
Villalobos for the past 20 years, she has supervised, managed and trained
doctors, veterinary technicians and support staff for many hospitals
in Southern California. Carreen says, "I also received an outstanding
education from pet care giver families. This is the part of my education
which has strengthened my commitment to this field. I have repeatedly
witnessed the devotion, compassion and heartfelt love that honors the human-animal
bond when working with my pet patients and their families. Dr. Villalobos
and I are rewarded each day by the gratitude we receive from families who
appreciate the help we provide to their animal family members." |

Roni Miyashiro
joined Dr. Alice Villalobos in 1994. Beginning her career in veterinary
medicine as a receptionist, she is now the Office Manager for both PAWSPICE
and Animal Oncology Consultation Service. Roni’s work experience
for the past 12 years has given her the skills and professionalism to confidently
reach out and assist our clients during an emotional and difficult time.
Roni says, “PAWSPICE offers the Human-Animal Bond care that our clients
are looking for. We provide for their best friends quality of life and comfort.

Melissa Lopez
is currently attending Mt. San Antonio Community College in the Veterinary
Technician program. After graduating in 2008, she will be eligible to sit
for her Registered Veterinary Technician licensing boards. Having worked
in veterinary hospitals since 2004, Melissa’s training is well rounded. She
is capable of handling all positions necessary here at PAWSPICE. Melissa’s
R.V.T. training program at school will enhance her already excellent technical
abilities and knowledge of veterinary medicine. |

Lena Russell
started her career in veterinary medicine as a volunteer in a work-study
program with Mira Costa High School and Dr. Villalobos’s animal hospital
when she was 14 years old. Realizing her compassionate nature and love for
animals she was quickly asked to join our staff as a technical assistant
training under Dr. Villalobos and Carreen Schuller. Over the past 8 years,
Lena has continued to learn and train at all our clinic locations and has
defined her knowledge base and skills as an oncology nurse, doctor’s
assistant and receptionist. Lena says, “I love working and caring
for animals and always will.” Lena is also currently continuing her
studying at El Camino and La Mesa colleges. |

Marena Nelson
is currently enrolled in her second year at El Camino College where she
is studying biology and chemistry. She met Carreen Schuller and Dr. Villalobos
through volunteering for the Peter Zippi Memorial Fund for Animals where
she helps to organize adoptions and care for rescued animals. She initially
became a client of PAWSPICE when her beloved cat, “Hoo Hoo”,
needed care, and eventually joined our staff in 2006. Marena works both
as our receptionist and Technician assistant. She is currently focused on
studying for her long-term goal of becoming a veterinarian. Marena says,
“ It is a gift to witness and participate in the strong friendships
and dedication of Human-Animal Bond relationships. I am so grateful to be
a part of PAWSPICE and to be offered a hands-on education in my passion
of caring for animals." |
